What happens when we feel unworthy, unsafe, or unseen? Often, we try to fix it…

Tantra and the Subtle Body:
Awakening Your Inner Energy Channels
As we continue the journey into the heart of Tantra, one of the most fascinating and transformative teachings is the exploration of the subtle body—the energetic layers that exist beyond our physical form. In Tantra, awakening and harmonizing these energy channels, or nadis, and energy centers, or chakras, is key to expanding consciousness, enhancing vitality, and experiencing deeper connections with ourselves and others.
In this next part of our series, we’ll explore how to understand and work with your subtle body to enhance your spiritual and personal growth.
The Subtle Body: Beyond the Physical
The concept of the subtle body refers to the unseen energy field that envelops and permeates your physical body. While our physical body can be touched and seen, the subtle body is made up of the vital life force energy, often referred to as prana or chi. This energy flows through the nadis (energy channels), and the chakras act as focal points for regulating and directing this energy.
Key Components of the Subtle Body:
- Nadis: The network of 72,000 energy channels that carry prana throughout the body.
- Chakras: The seven main energy centers, aligned along the spine, that influence different aspects of physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
Working with the subtle body in Tantra means activating these energy channels, opening the chakras, and cultivating a harmonious flow of prana.
Understanding the Chakras: Energy Centers of Transformation
While there are many chakras within the subtle body, Tantra primarily focuses on the seven major chakras, each governing specific areas of life. When these chakras are open and balanced, they lead to a more aligned and harmonious existence. When blocked, they can manifest in emotional, physical, or spiritual discomfort.
Here’s a brief overview of each chakra:
- Root Chakra (Muladhara):
- Location: Base of the spine
- Associated with: Grounding, stability, survival instincts
- Element: Earth
- Color: Red
- Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana):
- Location: Lower abdomen
- Associated with: Creativity, sexuality, pleasure
- Element: Water
- Color: Orange
- Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura):
- Location: Upper abdomen
- Associated with: Personal power, confidence, willpower
- Element: Fire
- Color: Yellow
- Heart Chakra (Anahata):
- Location: Center of the chest
- Associated with: Love, compassion, relationships
- Element: Air
- Color: Green
- Throat Chakra (Vishuddha):
- Location: Throat
- Associated with: Communication, self-expression, truth
- Element: Ether
- Color: Blue
- Third Eye Chakra (Ajna):
- Location: Forehead, between the eyes
- Associated with: Intuition, insight, vision
- Element: Light
- Color: Indigo
- Crown Chakra (Sahasrara):
- Location: Top of the head
- Associated with: Spiritual connection, enlightenment
- Element: Cosmic energy
- Color: Violet or white
When you work with these chakras, you begin to unlock deeper levels of awareness and energy within yourself.
Practices for Awakening the Subtle Body
Tantra offers several powerful techniques to awaken and balance your subtle body. Here are a few core practices:
1. Breathwork (Pranayama)
Pranayama refers to the conscious control of the breath to direct and move prana (energy) throughout your body. Through breathwork, you can activate the nadis, energize the chakras, and shift your energy in powerful ways.
Practice: Try alternate nostril breathing (Nadi Shodhana). This practice balances the masculine (solar) and feminine (lunar) energies, clearing the nadis and creating a sense of calm and harmony.
How to Practice:
- Sit comfortably, and close your right nostril with your thumb.
- Inhale deeply through your left nostril.
- Close your left nostril with your ring finger, and exhale through the right nostril.
- Inhale through the right nostril, close it, and exhale through the left.
- Continue this alternating pattern for 5-10 minutes, focusing on smooth, steady breaths.
2. Chakra Meditation
Chakra meditations help you focus on individual energy centers to awaken and balance them. By placing your attention and awareness on a specific chakra, you can clear blockages and activate its power.
Practice: Focus on the Heart Chakra for cultivating love and compassion.
How to Practice:
- Sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes, and take deep breaths.
- Visualize a green light glowing in the center of your chest, expanding with each breath.
- With each inhale, imagine drawing in love, and with each exhale, release any heaviness or emotional blockages.
- Spend 5-10 minutes focusing on this green light, feeling love radiate throughout your body.
3. Kundalini Yoga
Kundalini yoga is designed to awaken the coiled energy (Kundalini) at the base of the spine, activating all the chakras as this energy rises. This practice involves a combination of breathwork, postures, and mantras to release energy blockages and open the subtle body.
Practice: Start with the Kundalini Breath of Fire to activate your energy.
How to Practice:
- Sit tall with a straight spine.
- Begin rapid, rhythmic breathing through your nose, with quick inhales and exhales.
- Focus on pumping your navel toward your spine with each exhale.
- Continue this breath for 1-3 minutes, feeling energy rising through your body.
Personal Experience: My Awakening of the Subtle Body
I vividly recall my first deep experience working with the subtle body during a Kundalini yoga class. As I focused on breath and movement, I felt an intense surge of energy traveling up my spine. The sensations were unlike anything I had ever experienced, and it was as if my body and energy field were in perfect harmony. This moment marked a profound shift in my understanding of Tantra—not just as a philosophy but as an embodied practice that brings you closer to your true self.
Since then, I’ve integrated daily practices to stay connected with my subtle body, and I’ve noticed an increase in my vitality, awareness, and connection to both myself and the world around me.
Embracing the Subtle Body in Your Everyday Life
You don’t have to be in a special setting to connect with your subtle body—everyday activities can become opportunities to feel the flow of energy. When walking in nature, notice the sensations in your body. When interacting with others, observe how your energy shifts. Cultivate awareness, and you’ll begin to recognize the subtle currents of energy that shape your experiences.
Today’s Thought Exercise: Tune Into Your Chakras
Take a few minutes to sit quietly and focus on each of your chakras, from the Root to the Crown. As you bring your awareness to each energy center, ask yourself:
- How does this chakra feel?
- Is the energy flowing freely, or does it feel blocked?
- What emotions or thoughts arise as I focus on this area?
Keep a journal to track your observations and notice how your awareness shifts over time.
This exploration of the subtle body is another step on your Tantra journey. Let me know how the practices resonate with you and if you’d like to explore any specific areas further!
